Contract: Permanent, part-time role

Hours of work: Sunday 8.00am - 4.30pm (8 Hours per week)

Role location: SPCA Centre Nelson

About the role 

This role ensure animals housed at the SPCA Nelson, and in particular the Feline areas, are provided with the five freedoms outlined in the Animal Welfare Act 1999. The staff member provides for the physical health and behavioural needs of the animals housed at the centre, ensuring that their environment and care is maintained to the highest standards and supports the Nelson Centre Manager as required by ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the animal areas.

What we need from you 

Knowledge and Experience

> Qualifications or relevant experience in the animal care/welfare industry is required

> Confidence in handling companion animals displaying a range of temperaments 

> Experience in Animal drug administration 

> A sound understanding of animal behaviour – normal v abnormal

> An understanding of Contagious and Zoonotic diseases is desirable

Skills & Abilities

> Ability to work effectively without supervision and effectively prioritise daily tasks. 

> Excellent interpersonal skills – collaborate and communicate effectively with customers, volunteers and other employees. 

> Ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as to work alone. 

> Ability to manage confidential information with responsibility and integrity. 

> Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability (will include flexibility of hours) 

> Ability to manage stress and handle emotional situations while retaining empathy 

> Sound computer skills including the use of e-mail, internet and Microsoft Office applications.
