Job Description

There is one Fixed term role for 12-months available for a Senior Adviser or Adviser

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the Role

An Adviser/ Senior Adviser Animal Products contributes to the development, evaluation and review of standards, programmes and implementation tools which are used to control production and processing of animal products so that those products are safe and suitable for their intended use. This work is technically challenging and requires liaison and coordination with several different internal and external stakeholders to ensure that standards are science-based, practical, achievable and effective.  

New Zealand Food Safety is aiming to reduce human foodborne campylobacteriosis in New Zealand by 20% by 2025, and this goal is incorporated in the Campylobacter Action Plan for 2020-2021. 

The Campylobacter Action Plan primarily focuses on the poultry food chain. It incorporates a risk-based, farm to plate chain approach to identification, selection, and implementation of new control measures that will significantly reduce the foodborne campylobacteriosis burden in New Zealand. 

Your role will be to support the implementation of the Campylobacter Action Plan, you will be working with Ministry for Primary Industries teams, industry and consumers to create sensible interventions which reduce Campylobacter and helps New Zealand Food Safety achieve the 20% reduction.

Within this role, you would be responsible for:

  • Working within the Poultry supply chain identifying and implementing interventions that reduce the risk of Campylobacter.
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders across the Poultry supply chain.
  • Assessing the impacts to interventions made to reduce Campylobacter.
  • Facilitating and driving changes within the Poultry supply chain which enables MPI to get closer towards our Campylobacter targets.

Mōu - About You

This role is seeking either an Adviser or Senior Adviser.

To be a Senior Adviser we would expect the candidate to have the following experience and knowledge:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification (food technology, microbiology, veterinary is preferred)
  • Experience and proven understanding in food production and processing practices 
  • Experience and understanding in food regulation
  • Well-developed and technical knowledge of food safety, particularly HACCP.
  • Knowledge of food legislation.
  • Knowledge of trade in animal products, food and their regulatory requirements.
  • Know and understand the primary sector and its contribution to the New Zealand economy.
  • Awareness of business and political drivers
  • Ability to upskill and develop others
  • Familiarity with New Zealand's regulatory systems and legislation associated with primary production and processing or food
  • Experience in the development of implementation tools (such as guidance documents and templates) to help implement those standards

The salary for this role is circa $66,111.00 and $102,497.00 per annum depending on skills and experience
