Veterinary Nurses

Jan 19

This job is no longer accepting applications.

  • 25-30 hours per week – rostered over 7 days.
  • Specialist nursing and care facility with a focus on high needs / recovering dogs.
  • Located in West Auckland - Taupaki/Kumeu (Rural)
  • Canine Care with a difference requiring dedication, passion and experience.

The Doggery is a unique veterinary nursing facility dedicated to the care of dogs only with higher level medical conditions requiring monitoring and post-surgical recovery involving rehabilitation. We also specialise in caring for dogs with anxiety / behaviour issues and our senior guests.

About the role:

We look after a wide range of dogs, many that would not have access to a general admission day care and boarding facilities due to the high level of care they require and we also operate a day-care service and wellbeing / adventure outings for our furry clients.

A core part of your role will be supporting our Nursing Manager/Owner and providing care to the high needs patients.  As with all days as a VN, you will do everything from emergency care to physio, monitoring and medical care, as well as some admin, organising and liaising with clients. You will also transport dogs to appointments such as specialists or hydrotherapy. Many of our clients are long term with high needs, so you get the time and space to develop strong bonds and really support and comfort our dogs.

While you will spend a good deal of your time nursing in the main facility, we also run a day-care and adventures, so there will be days that you will be rostered on to go out with the dogs on the farm, beach or forest.

This is an all – weather, 7 day a week rostered job for 25 to 30 hours per week between the hours of 6 am and 8 pm, depending on bookings and demand. We are open 365 days a year, so you will be rostered on for some school and public holidays and possibly some overnights shifts to assist the manager.

About you:

You must be physically fit and able to walk (sometimes fast!) over rough ground and manage large dogs. Have the ability to manoeuvre recumbent patients correctly. You will be working outside in all weather on a farm, beach and forests, so if you love the outdoors and being with dogs, this could be a great role for you. You will need to be an experienced dog handler, with a minimum of Diploma in Veterinary Nurse qualification or equivalent with 2 plus years of clinical experience that allows you work confidentiality and independently in a range of team and sole-charge situations. Because you will share the workload with our small and passionate team of carers, it is essential that you can tell us about how you’ve made use of your team working and communication skills in other roles. You will also have some administration or computer skills.

You will be driving the dog bus, so you must have a full, clean drivers’ licence and be a confident and very careful driver. You will also need your own car to get to work as there is no public transport to the farm.
