ANZCO Foods have a newly created opportunity for an experienced Vet to join the business. Reporting to our South Island Grazing Operations Manager, the primary responsibility of this position will be to provide animal veterinary services across the business with a strong focus on herd health and preventative medicine programs, pre-transport certification, reproduction caseload (including obstetrics) and treatments.

We are seeking an enthusiastic professional who is looking for a role slightly different to the usual veterinary practice position.

Key activities will include the following:

  • Having a strong focus on herd health and preventative medicine programs while recommending and facilitating improvements and maintenance of standards through engagement with stakeholders
  • Stock health, with a view to regularly assess and improve the health of the herd to agreed standards
  • Recommending and implementing animal welfare standards and programmes across the farms and feedlot
  • Working with herds to meet breeding and production goals
  • Advising on preventative health care, nutrition and the care and welfare of animals
  • Recommending and facilitating animal treatment plans for all stock classes and ages
  • Treating working dogs and horses on farms as required
  • Vet certifications as required
  • Accurate record keeping on treatments and programs and herds and animal health history
  • Developing and recommending strategies to introduce short and long term innovative on-farm practices
  • Work with Farm Managers to prevent and treat animal welfare
  • Reporting on costs related to treatments and conception rate data and any other reporting requirements
  • Having a proactive approach to herd health and recommend and assist with implementations of programs.
  • Post- mortem findings and reporting

The qualifications and previous experience required is the following:

  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science or relevant qualification
  • Be registered with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand
  • Have a current Annual Practising Certificate
  • Three or more years large animal experience essential dairy herd experience
  • Confidence working with large animals
  • Ability to effectively communicate across the business
  • Ability to build and develop relationships with stakeholders and problem solve
