Contract: Permanent part-time

Hours of work: 28 hours per week to be worked on a roster basis between 8.30am – 5pm Monday to Sunday.

Location: SPCA Hamilton Centre

SPCA Hamilton are currently seeking an organised, dedicated Volunteer Coordinator and Animal Care attendant who enjoys working within a busy and complex setting to assist our team provide positive animal welfare outcomes.

This is a busy role, where no two days will be the same, the successful candidate will need to be self-motivated, technologically savvy, energetic, passionate about providing positive welfare outcomes for animals, and show a high level of initiative. 

Ensuring that animal welfare is always a primary consideration, and all animals under the responsibility of SPCA Hamilton are cared for appropriately. 

Key responsibilities of the role:

To ensure that all animals in care are catered for in accordance with the established operating procedures.

To ensure the appropriate recruitment and training of volunteers so that volunteers are trained and supervised while in attendance.

To provide a friendly, welcoming and efficient first point of contact by phone, email and in person for all potential volunteers. 

To ensure that all public interactions meet the expectation of good customer service.

To act as back up and support for all other operational functions of the centre.

Be involved in all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the Centre with a focus on the recruitment and training of volunteers.

Ensuring a safe and supportive working environment where staff and volunteers can carry out their duties efficiently and effectively.

Growing the available volunteer database to ensure appropriate volunteer numbers are available for each shift.

Support and promote a collaborative and positive culture within the Centre and external stakeholders.

Develop and maintain community relationships and the local reputation of the SPCA brand.

Ensuring compliance with all statutory and legal obligations of the Centre and adherence with all established guidelines, protocols and policies.

What we need from you 

Our ideal candidate will have:

Previous experience working with volunteers is desirable.

Previous experience in an animal shelter or similar environment is desirable. 

The ability to make sound, informed decisions based on animal welfare.

Proficient use in MS Word and Outlook.

Demonstrated strengths in accuracy, precision and attention to detail. 

Be highly organized with the ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet expected deadlines.

The ability to manage confidential information with responsibility and integrity.

The ability to manage stress and handle emotional situations while retaining empathy. 

The ability to work in the field which requires a degree of physical fitness.

Have excellent communication and customer service skills, with the ability to handle conflict situations and a friendly and positive attitude.

A clean Full Driver’s License (ability to drive manual vehicle).
