Small Animal Internships
This job is no longer accepting applications.
Closes: Aug 28, 2021
Animal Referral Centre (ARC) is a busy independent small animal specialist and emergency practice established in 2016. It is locally owned and operated and has specialists in a wide range of disciplines including small animal internal medicine, surgery, emergency and critical care, diagnostic imaging, oncology, cardiology and neurology (from late 2021).
The caseload is varied and interesting, consisting of a mixture of referral cases from practices in Auckland and beyond, as well as primary (emergency) cases.
The clinic has a full in-house Idexx laboratory, Radiometer blood gas and electrolyte machine, multiparameter patient monitors, digital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, fluoroscopy, CT and a hydrotherapy suite. There are dedicated cat and dog reception areas, consulting rooms and wards. MRI and radiation therapy are available offsite.
The internships provide numerous opportunities for learning through daily hospital rounds, interaction with our specialist team, regular journal club and internal training sessions. A mentor for the duration of the programme will be assigned, depending on the intern’s area of interest. This mentorship will help the intern in their professional development and career progression as a veterinarian. The preparation of a case report or other manuscript suitable for peer-reviewed publication will be strongly encouraged and supported.
We have 2 programmes on offer starting in late 2021:
Rotating internship: (2 positions)
A 13-month fixed-term rotating internship starting in December 2021 and ending in January 2023. Core rotations include internal medicine, surgery and emergency/critical care. The remainder of the internship comprises shorter/elective rotations in other disciplines including diagnostic imaging, cardiology, oncology and neurology.
The programme provides a unique opportunity to experience a broad range of specialist disciplines without needing to leave New Zealand. The programme will provide the foundations for a high level of competency in all aspects of small animal practice and preparation for further training/specialisation. The intern will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills in a supportive, cohesive environment.
Surgery-focused internship: (2 positions)
A 12-month fixed term internship starting in December 2021. The majority of the internship will be spent working with ARC’s specialist surgeons. The remainder of the internship programme will be spent on emergency and critical care and elective rotations depending on the intern’s area of interest.
This programme is designed to develop the knowledge and experience of a new or recent graduate who has a strong interest in small animal surgery and provide preparation for further training/specialisation in surgery.
