This is an opportunity to work with an innovative team in the exciting New Zealand livestock sector. A research position focussed on developing and testing sheep monitoring systems that are aided by machine learning. The position is funded for six-months by a Callaghan Career Grant for a recent Masters or PhD graduate.
This position involves working at the interface between the rural sector and advanced computer vision technologies. In 2018 neXtgen Agri played a key role in developing a sheep recognition system that could identify individual sheep in a flock of 2,000 with an accuracy of 95%. Since then we have continued to develop the system and we are working to extend that research into a world-leading system that is compatible with the day-to-day running of a sheep farm. We are currently developing a system that can match ewes with their progeny based on cameras that are enabled with machine learning. This position will be primarily focussed on the on-farm implementation of these image capture systems and will be defining the accuracy of the deployed systems.
The position will involve a considerable amount of domestic travel.
- Experience in collecting large data sets

To be eligible for this role, candidates must have completed either a Masters or PhD in the last 12 months with a New Zealand University and must be legally able to work in New Zealand.
